Provide an accessible search for large sites, on every page

Place the search bar consistently on an accessible part of the page (header or footer)

The following are some best practices for designing search boxes:

  • Place the search bar consistently on an accessible part of the page (either in the header, footer, or both)
  • Make search box wide enough for users to see what they are inputting in the search box
  • Provide a curated list of commonly searched terms
  • Display user’s recent search terms (and consider providing the option to clear all search history items)
  • Use forgiving search fields that can handle typos, synonyms, and variants
