On the internet, everyone is competing for attention. To draw viewers to your content, spend a little time writing sharp and informative meta descriptions/tags, title tags and key tags.
To improve the search engine ranking of your article or page, create page titles, headings, sub-headings and hyperlinks that contain keywords. Page titles should be formatted using title tags, e.g. <title>, while headings and sub-headings should be formatted using heading tags e.g. <h1>, <h2>, etc. You should also optimise text in title tags by keeping text under 64 characters.
A meta description or meta tag is an HTML tag that identifies the contents of a web page for the search engines. Meta tags contain a general description of the article, keywords and copyright information.
Search engines often display the Title tag and Meta tag as the short summary on the search engine results page. The Keywords meta tag also helps to place your article in the right results.
These tags are hidden on the page but they can be viewed by selecting from the browser menu, View/Source or View/Page Source. This is an example:
<meta name=”keywords” content=”Brands, marketing, brand failure, Srinivas Reddy, Nike, Perrier, Colgate, Apple, Baycol, Pfizer, Vioxx, Merck” />
